There is a slight error in what you say- the new 3x extender is meant for
the EOS D3 and D1v cameras with the 12MP full frame sensors.
The extra stops are achieved by a software algorithm available as a Plugin
for the Canon/Adobe Embedded Photoshop that is a part of the camera
firmware.

This firmware also enables the camera to printout the photographs on an
attached Canon printer. The connection is achieved via USB or the onboard
Bluetooth. If you have a large enough camera bag, you can use this setup as
a polaroid printer.

I have this from an authoritative source- I overheard someone talking about
it when describing it as he had heard it on some mailing list.

I am not so sure about the rumours of the ftp client on the camera that will
upload the photographs along with thumbnails to a webserver of your choice
since I (over)heard this all in a nightclub with rather loud music and
flowing beer.

This happened just recently, last Sunday.
