This is odd.  On the basis of near focussing distance
alone, the older non-USM 100/2.8 Macro seems gobs more
attractive then the newer USM version.

To be able to get full 1:1 magnification at 12" is
definitely a lot more desirable than the same at 5.9".
 Think of all the butterflies you wouldn't scare away!
 Think of the increased working distance to allow for
lighting equipment, etc.

Am I missing something here?
