I don't remember exactly, but when I bought my 100/2.8 Macro USM, I
looked into these same questions. I believe that the non-USM version's
working distance was about 4.2 or 4.5 inches, quite a bit less than the
USM version. Also, this figure must be measured from the filter ring
rather than the front element, because the front element is recessed in
the non USM version I believe.
I think the working distance figure for the old one was listed at canon
USA's web site, but it may have been removed since.
