I generally use a version of the zone system when I shoot B & W with my IIe.
I look for the lightest or darkest area and dial in exposure compensation to
get what I want.  It's pretty effective.  The 9.5% partial metering hasn't
seemed to be a problem.  When I first started shooting B & W with the IIe I
brought along my old trusty Sekonic handheld meter to check against and that
got me started.  I employ a 25A (red) filter with a polarizer for scenic
shots, and an X1 (green) for portraiture.  Let us know how you do, Ken. B &
W work is very interesting and creative.
