That sounds like as issue with your lab, it was my understanding that
Select B&W+ was designed specifically for use in minilabs, including
proper color balanced backing for printing on color paper.  I could be
wrong, though, I don't use that film.
The Potra I shot was extremely contrasty, and I was less than thrilled
with the skin tones.  Good grain, though.
