It's a Japanese term that essentially refers to the out of focus area 
of a photo.  For some, it has little or no import.  To my way of 
seeing, the out of focus areas can inform an image as much as color 
rendition, contrast, and resolution.  It's an interesting trait, and 
one of those things that is often overlooked until you become aware 
of it, and then you suddenly notice it everywhere and begin to see 
the impact it can have.
