Would I go down the street and ask to borrow the Ferrari or Porsche for a
few laps around the block? No.
So, you can say you don't think your insurance policy allows you to loan out
equipment, and mention the reason is the $2,500 (if not more) worth of gear
that insurance company won't taken too kindly if something happens while it
is being used by someone else other than the household occupant it is
insured under.
You might even want to use this reasoning this time.
BTW, I know exactly how you feel, I would only ask one or two people to
borrow their equipment, and it is only because they know how careful I treat
my equipment and know me well enough to know that I will take full
responsibility if something does happen.
