The first thought I have before I lend (loan) anyone a lens ... what
lenses have they got that I might want to borrow sometime?
That about sums it up.
- The condition of their lenses is important: are they looked after
well or do they not care. If they do not look after their own ...
- Could you afford to lose the lens if the unlikely happened and they
ran away ... there is a balance between friendship and self. I would
not lend my closest friends my 300 2.8 yet I have loaned my 20mm and
24mm.
My Tamron 28-200mm, I would lend to Ken's colleagues' niece,
seriously ;o)
It need not be just friendship, it is cynicism too. (Anglers call it
ground bait). The loan of a lens might open a door for you ... the
borrower might feel "they owe you one".
ATEOTD: saying no is no big deal either if you are not happy with the
request. If the friend pushed it after the "no" then they were not
that much of a friend after all.
