Well, Julian, my old EOS 10 focuses pretty darned good. Especially with
USM lenses. The EOS 7 I tried in the store with an EF 28-105 did not impress
me, in fact I'd say my 10 was faster, although I don't own that lens.
I've got nothing against auto focus either, in fact I use it some of the
time. 25 percent of the time I find myself manually touching up, and 25
percent I find myself switching it off. I'm getting better at predicting
switching it off though :-)
The things I'm against are all the bells and whistles that adorn the new
bodies. To me, a DOF preview button and mirror up button are two things I'd
like on a body for sure. The rest of it, except for the mode knob, the
command dial, and the partial metering button I'd rather not have. Although,
having a button to switch focus points, focus mode, and a function button
are nice, I could live without them. To add the umpteen other switches and
levers of the 7/30 or for that matter any of the newer bodies would just
create confusion and generally get in my way. I don't really need mid-roll
rewind, multi-exposure, sequencial shooting, asa compensation, exposure
compensation, etc etc. I can use manual mode and press the button once for
each shot I want. Oh ya, I forgot, I can't live without the shutter button,
that one I have to have :-)
As you can tell, I'm not a sports shooter, but I believe some shooters
used to get good shots before all this came along, just using manual
everything cameras.
In a way, although it's not perfect, my EOS 10 seems to have just enough
switches and buttons on it to suit me. Perhaps a couple too many, but
overall, it's very clean and easy to use. I can still see the black of the
body between the switches :-)
Jim
