I have the 100-400L and this is an excellent lens. I have used it
mainly for sports so far. It gives AF with the 1.4tc. I previously
purchased the 75-300 IS, thinking that I would use the two lenses,
with the shorter lens being lighter and thus more transportable.
However whilst the shorter lens is a good lens, I am going to sell
it as I never use it now. The extra weight of the longer lens is
compensated by being a much better lens. As to other lenses, I don't
have any to compare, but the 200/2.8 is supposed to be a good lens.
When combined with a 1.4 tc, you get a 280/4, at less than the cost
of the 100-400. The 70-200/2.8 is similair price to the 100-400, and
is supposed to be superb optically.
If the 100-400 suits you focal lenght wise, you will not be
dissapointed, certainly within that price range.
