Hi
Still some years ago I also had FD gear including 70-210/4 and 300/4
and at the end for a short while also 35-105/3.5, 80-200/4L and 300/4L
before I switched to EOS. I have 28-135 IS and 100-400 IS and 100/2
and 200/2.8L as well.
What I don't like wery much in the 28-135 is the slowness in the long
end. If that doesn't bother you then it and the 100-400 might be a
good couple for you. 100-400 is a bit heavy but in other respects
it is a great lens (slight corner fall-off at 400/5.6 but stopping
down 0.5-1 stops helps).
If you need more speed (IS doesn't stop subject movement as you know)
and/or lighter lens I would also look at the 70-200/2.8L and /4L zooms.
The 2.8 version is fast (aperture wise) and may be a bit heavy but
so does the 100-400.
Actually 70-200/4L is light and not so expensive and should work
with the 1.4x also. If lens switching doesn't feel annoying
you might want to get (second hand ?) 100/2 and/or 200/2.8L "fixeds"
as well, maybe you could keep an 1.4x on the 200/2.8L all the time
(to get 280/4) but probably the quality - though good - would be
slightly worse than with your FD 300/4L, I bet.
I would surely miss the fast 100/2 or similar (135/2L or 200/2.8L)
sometimes if I only had the 28-135 and 100-400 zooms.
If you use flash mainly then maybe there is no problem with lens
speed but with your experience you should know...
regards Vesa
