Focus once before or immediately at the beginning of the
show, then switch the lens to manual and leave it.

For ISO 100 film, f/8 or f/11 is a good starting point.
Then either do exposure on the manual setting or use the
bulb setting and a black board to start and stop the
exposure in front of the lens by hand.

The longer the exposure, the longer the "streaks" of the
fireworks. Opening the aperture increases the "thickness"
of the streaks, but be careful not to overexpose.

Bring a flashlight and don't fall of that roof.

Don't try to do too many things at once. Enjoy the show.

I just photographed fireworks on Sunday night:

    http://www.citilink.com/~larry/in/minnesota (select the 20010701* files)

These were mostly shot at ISO 100, 2 sec at f/11, tungsten
light balance.

I'll try to photograph some more fireworks today, but at
f/16 this time. Fireworks can be surprisingly bright.
