I've owned both, and had both at the same time for a
while. I think, overall, the 3 is a well made as the
1n. The only place I really noticed a difference was
the baseplate, which is clearly flimsier on the 3.
But my 3 has been dropped a number of times, once on
an asphalt parking lot. The only damage is a small
nick in the top plate. The shutter design of the
three has been tested far beyond what the 1n shutter
was designed for, btw, but I doubt you'd wear out the
shutter on any EOS unless you're a working pro.
As for weather sealing, I don't know what Canon would
gain by lying. Mine's been rained on, but never
heavily. It's shown no problems, however. I seem to
recall that when Pop Photo did their test of the 3
they said it was sealed the same way as the 1n.
If ruggedness and weather sealing is really your top
priority, you probably ought to go for a 1v, which is
markedly better than either the 1n or 3. But for all
but the most absurd uses, either the 1n or 3 will do fine.
