I've owned an EOS 3 for only a few months now, but my first impressions
are quite good. I previously had an EOS 5 (A2E) and travelled with it a
few times to tropical places with 90% humidity and +38C and it behaved
just fine. However, when it came to dust and sand, it wasn't that good.
One of the reasons why I bought the 3, was because the buttoms are
supposedly dust and moisture sealed. I've done quite a few rolls of
macro photo with it, nose down on dirty floors and sand and so far I had
no problems. If the EOS 5 endured tropical wheater so well, I can only
assume that the EOS 3 will be at least just as good. Never owned an 1N,
so I can't really compare it.
When it comes to impact resistance, my personal opinion is that chance
plays an important roll on impacts. Of course an EOS1V is more resistant
than an EOS 3000, but my Olympus mju II has once taken a very nasty bump
and survived while a firends EOS 1 took a bump that seemed to be not so
serious and needed a $300 repair (about 5 years ago). I guess I was just
lucky.
Hope this helps you.

Hugo Lopes
