When I was in the market for an AF camera, I was initially considering
Nikon,
mostly because of the reputation of their optics. I was talking with a
co-worker who used them, and he explained how they used one motor in the
body to
wind the film and focus the lens. Being in the business of maintaining tape
recorders, I came to the conclusion that dedicated motors for each function
was
the way to go, and more or less dismissed Nikon at that point. (This was
pre-Silent Wave)

Oddly enough, I bought an Elan II because it was capable of mid-roll rewind
with
leader out, and I had been burned in the past doing this on my previous
camera.
Nikon didn't offer this feature of a comparable model.

My friend also mentioned the myth that all Nikkor lenses will fit on any
Nikon
body. It turns out that they may fit, but they won't work. Canon may have
annoyed FD users by changing mounts, but they seem to have done it right.

In summary, I think I made the right choice, for some of the wrong reasons,
but
am very satisfied with my Elan II and EOS 5.

I decided early last year that it was time to upgrade to the AF world from
my old Chinon CG-5 which had served me for 15 years (not very actively
thogh). I visited internet shops and studied fact sheets and came to the
conclusion that I wanted a Canon (even though my brother has a Nikon, can
lead to interesting discussions :-). I decided that I wanted an EOS5 but
could afford an EOS50E and asked for comments on a Swedish discussion forum.
I got one answer that said: "Sure the EOS50 is a nice camera but I can sell
you an EOS5 in mint condition insted. Interested?" Therefore I ended up with
a used EOS5 instead of a new EOS50, a choice I have never regretted. Also I
got my casmera cheaper than a new 50. Got two lenses to begin with (28-105
and 75-300). Added a 540EZ last fall and a 50/1.8 II a week ago. Now if I
could only afford that nice 70-200/2.8 and perhaps an EOS3 and .....
No special advertising influence though.
