I, for one, think it's a great idea. It's true that
if you have the time to set and steady yourself, the
2.8 aperture allows reasonable shutter speeds for hand
holding, at least outdoors.
But indoors, IS will let me use a slower, finer
grained film, or let me handhold where I might
otherwise need a tripod or monopod. (And yes, there
are lots of indoor uses for a 200mm lens).
Remember that the 1/focal length rule is valid when
you can set and hold the camera steady. But when
shooting action outdoors, it's not always possible to
steady yourself and get set for the shot. When
something happens suddenly in a direction other than
where you're looking, you swivel, point, and shoot,
and the fine techniques of breath control, posture,
etc. are forgotten.
Even at shutter speeds nominally fast enough to hand
hold without IS, this lens will definitely get me
sharper shots in those situations. Especially when
I'm using the 2x TC with the lens.
