I use a 300mm F4 L IS lens with a 500D close-up lens.
This combination has an effective focal length of 187mm, and a 1:1
magnification ratio. That's close enough to a real 180mm macro IS lens for
me.
And with a 77-72mm step-down ring and the 72 mm macrolite adapter I can even
fit the MR14-EX ring flash.

Although I use this combination a lot, i'm still not sure about IS for macro
use. IS only stabilizes left-right or up-down movements. When I'm shooting
macro without a tripod (why else you'd want IS), my biggest problem is
stabilizing back to front. DOF is like, 1 mm, and getting that on target is
more difficult than framing.
