Michael,
The focusing speed of this lens was one of my major concerns while trying
to decide if I would purchase it or not. The only bad thing I had really
heard about the lens was how slow the AF was. When I was pretty sure I
wanted it, I went to my dealer with my camera body, a EOS A2, and asked the
sales person if I could mount the lens and see if it was what I
expected. It worked great. I don't know what all the talk about slow AF
speed is about, I haven't had the problem. The only time AF on this lens
has acted strange for me is if the selector for distance is off. There are
two positions, 1.8 meters/5.9 ft.-infinity and 6.5 meters/21.3
ft.-infinity. The lens is very sensitive here. I have used the quite a
bit in AL servo, predictive focus, and it is fast and accurate there
also. I don't know much about the Elan 7 so I'm not sure if there will be
a speed issue with that body.
As far as blurring out the back ground goes. I find myself using this lens
when I "TRY" and take portraits of my kids. I have had very good results
blurring out the background. If I stand at the 6ft. minimum focusing
distance, or close to it, and shot with the lens opened all the way up, I
can get a good blur. The longer the focal length the better. I have a
couple that I know I did at 250mm and the backgrounds are unrecognizable.
Also, with the IS on I have made a shot at 400mm at f/5.6, hand held, at a
1/10 of a sec. and gotten a sharp picture.
I have nothing but good things to say about this lens.
Hope this helps.
Tom
