Echoing Tom's comments, I also like the 100-400 and find it to be an
excellent lens for wildlife...cougars, wolves, kids...and it does indeed let
you get some nice stuff without having to haul around your tripod in many
instances. Because it's a fairly slow lens, it's AF speed is susceptible to
lighting conditions I've found, and I've noted a certain amount of hunting
while shooting where it's dark, under a forest canopy for instance. This is
exacerbated of course when I mount a 1.4X entender. But under better
lighting conditions, it seems to have nice focusing speed if not the "snap"
of say, the 70-200 f/2.8.

I use the 100-400 with a 1v (mostly) and also an EOS 5, and while I'm sure
there must be some milli-second difference, in a practical way, I'm not
really able to tell any difference in focusing speed between the two bodies.
So I'd guess it's performace would be acceptable on your Elan 7.

There are better lenses; longer, faster, sharper (more expensive)...but I
think the 100-400 has found a real niche with many outdoor photographers
because it is so darn versatile. I've nailed many shots while the
(Nikon..ha) guy next to me with his 300 f/2.8 Nikkor on a tripod was waiting
for the subject to get to the right distance for decent framing while I'm
popping them off at 400, then 300, then 200 millimeters as the subject gets
closer. The creme de la creme part was when Mr. Nikon starts talking about
getting himself an 80-400 VR Nikkor so he could keep up ;-)
