Switch the lens to manual focus, not the body.  I know this will work
because I shot a roll with my Rebel 2000 at a NASCAR race this way last
spring.  I came up with several out of focus photos but the camera was more
than happy to let me take them.  :-)  (I had more shots that *were* in
focus, and I think the overall results for that series were better than if
I'd left the camera on  auto.)
