Hi all,
There's been some discussion here on the list about 3rd party wide angle
lenses recently so I think my post will be at least a bit on-topic (in terms
of wide angles).
I bought a Canon EF 20-35 in mid-July and I'm very sorry to say I'm
disappointed with the lens -- to be more exact, it's the optical quality
that really bothers me.
I've taken enough slides with the lens since I bought it to conclude the
edges are unacceptable to me. While the center is OK (to say the least), the
detail in the edges is disastrous. And when I say 'edges' I mean about 30%
towards the center from each side, not just some tiny strip around the
frame.
This brings me to another problem. It seems that the right side has less
detail than the left one. Let me say it clearly that I shoot a test roll
with my EOS50e sitting steady on a tripod with MLU and remote release. Lens
aperture was from the minimum at a respective focal length to as high as
f/11. The right side of the frame was still less sharp than the left one,
and the overall sharpness was nothing like what I expected
Now two questions. Firstly, am I just expecting too much of a relatively
cheap lens and should I simply go for a prime if I want the optimum in
picture quality?
And secondly: do you happen to know a Web site with test pictures taken with
a 20-35 at various focal length/apperture combinations?
Thank you in advance for any comments.
Maciek
