Thank you Craig for your question. Probably the first thing I should have
done before complaining about a lemon lens is THINK. I didn't view my slides
on a lightbox using a loupe, just my slide projector.

And it turned out there must be sth wrong with my slide projector lens. I
had told you the right side was softer than the left in my shots. A simple
experiment -- I flipped the slide horizontally and put it back into the
projector slot and guess what -- now the 'logical' left side was soft and
the 'logical' right side was sharp (physically noting changed and still the
right side was the soft one). A load off my chest, really.

So now I'm on a good way to thinking there might be everything OK with my
Canon lens. I am going to a local photo lab that offers a softbox and loupe
on Friday to have a closer look at a selected group of slides. Maybe my
20-35 ain't a lemon after all. Keep my fingers crossed for it -- I really
like the lens!
