If you get the IIe, you can get depth-of-field preview by looking at the
upper left portion of the viewfinder. There's a small diamond shape there,
and when you look at it, the aperture stops down until you release or press
the shutter all the way. You can, as you already know, set it to the AE
lock button, and I often do this when doing macro photograph or other shots
where I find it more difficult to align my eye precisely against the eye cup
to get the eye controlled focus and DOF preview to work.
The IIe is a great camera, but it does have some quirks with the battery
sometimes (freezes up until you open and close the battery compartement).
