The AF-assist light is a funny story, much like a 4 sided coin (odd!).
Did you
know or have noticed that the "much preffered" near-IR assist light of
the 50(E)
is partly shadowed with the bigger lenses?. I've a 28-135 and it blocks
the
whole left-most pattern and part of the central one, leaving me to focus
with
the right AF point ONLY. (It will work sometimes with the central as
well with
the shorter end of the lens. The more the lens extends, the less
AF-assist
near-IR pattern I get !!).<<
That is why the pattern is made up of three very large circles-
compare it to a Sunpak or Vivitar flash, and any one of the three
circles from the IIE is larger than the entire light pattern from the
third-party flash!
