happened two weeks ago 1.5 rolls into a brand new 2CR5.
A loaner EOS-3 and EF100-400 from Canon also exhibited the same problem
three times last weekend during an airshow, so it seems this is not an
isolated problem only with my gear, and I now wonder if it is an inherent
problem with IS lenses and the EOS-3 / 1V cameras under a certain
combination of usage?

Ken,
Over the last 2 years I have constantly used my EOS-3 with the 100-400mm and
have not had any lock ups.
Maybe I was lucky but using it for numerous events I am sure I would have
noticed what you have said.
