Comparing the focus speed of the 28-105 USM and the 50mm 1.8 isn't really an apples to
apples kind of comparison. A fixed focal length lens will generally focus faster than
a zoom, the shorter the focal length, the faster it will probably focus. Compare the
focus speed of the 28-105 to that of your 35-80. It is hard for me to say
definatively, since the only non USM lens I have is the 50mm 1.8, but you should see a
marked difference.
