Being an ex-Minolta X-700 user, I've always checked the A/F on their latest
cameras at UK exhibitions. Best low light, low contrast focusing that I've
had with EOS has been with my EOS10 or EOS50E (ElanIIE) with its built-in
near-IR AF assist light. Far, far better than some of Minolta's fairly
recent high end(ish) offerings (800Si). I do wish this feature (switchable
via CF) was available on my EOS3 without needing my recently purchased ST-E2
(sucker that I am for gadgets!). Even so, last night I found that my EOS3
was not making use of the ST-E2's A/F assist when the ambient lighting
(plain cream kitchen wall lit by 2 fluorescent tubes) was too high. Reduced
the ambient lighting and the A/F assist kicked in and I could focus. This
was not a question of my not seeing the red A/F beam when the kitchen lights
were on, because I checked for it by watching in a mirror.
