Hi Chip, I use the 1v + 300/2.8IS + 1.4x combo for most of my trackside work. I can get in close enough on several corners to use the lens at 300mm but it works so well at 420mm that I now tend to just leave it in place. The loss in focus speed with the 2x fitted is far more noticable and I therefore use this setup more sparingly.
I use the EOS link software mainly for reviewing the results of shoots and experimentation. I find it invaluable for this. I also use the software for setting up personal functions like faster AF and shortest shutter lag time, to name a few. As far as your portrait shots of players you don't know, I have done several new motorcycle media launchs recently where there was up to a dozen journo's that I didn't know. I found the best way to record requested shots was to push the function button on the side and record the film ID number, ie: 850 - 01, as well as the frame number, which I then wrote on a form with the journo's name. My processor is aware that I need the film leader kept with the corresponding images so it is fairly simple then to identify the requested images for each individual. Hope this helps.
