No loss in speed, but tracking is more difficult as you really need to keep
the centre sensor point well positioned on your subject, making good
composition hard at times. Rather than using the centre point only, I
generally have it on auto but with custom function 17-1 or 17-2 selected.
This excellent idea expands the focus point selection to other adjacent
points and makes fast tracking far simpler and more consistent. Other Canon
professionals I know use this feature also.

This is a fair desciption of what I see with the 1v as well. It is probably
fair to say that overall AF performance will be improved over your 1n, but
the incremental changes when using TC's will remain.

Whatever you do the 1v + 300/2.8 + 1.4x will not focus as fast as the 1v +
400/2.8. But the combo will be better than what you have currently and may
well be enough for your application. You can never tell without trying. I
wouldn't buy a 400/2.8 anyway as I have always found it to be too awkward
and heavy. Given the choice I would take a 500/4.

Yep. Only gives the ID though, not the shooting data.

Does

Dunno Chip. The shutter lag is reduced but I'm unaware of any compromise.
Certainly not in AF performance which is critical to my work.
