Once, but I have and use the 1.2/85mm L, which is similar to it.

It is not fast at all, but it is very accurate.
The M1 motor has to move enormous glass, and that takes time.
On the other hand both lenses are FTM, and if your eyes are
good enough, you'll be much faster focussing manually.
Since most of your subjects will be somewhat predictable,
it is easier than one might think.

It is.

Accurate, but not fast.

Yes, and I'd rather suggest the excellent 1.2/85mm L
instead. I love this lens for it's excellent performance
and it has saved my life in more than one situation
where not having it would have resulted in no picture
at all.

I have once shot a gloomy theatre performance with huge
press interest. Rather big setup, and then the clear message:
Pop only one flash and you are out the door. Oh. Silence.
Something like 30 to 40 other photographers looking down on
their 2.8/70-200 lenses, looking worried.

After the first flash and the first bounced colleague, no
more flash was seen. I ended up at 1/4 sec wide open for
800 ASA film. I was the only photographer to bring home
pictures that day.

On another occasion the lens allowed me to extend a
shooting for the decisive time into dawn, saving the
production a full shooting day, equalling to around
10k saved dollars.

Yes, the lens is special. But if you can make use of it,
there is no alternative and it easily pays off. I have
already owned the FD 1.2/85 mm L and I bought the
EF 1.2/85mm L when the switch to EOS came because of
my good experiences with the lens.

AF is slow, but the D30 AF sucks anyway. Manual focussing
is perfectly fine with me. But be aware that the lens is
EM electro manual, whenever you turn the ring it will use
up batteries, and the M1 motor draws one full Watt of power.

I always carry extra batteries.
