Also I think like this. Maybe the sales-journalist just wanted to
write something appetizing. I think they didn't say Canon is going
to make one ("konstruieren" could also mean just 'plan' or 'design',
right?) although something such might well appear.
Because DO technology makes things lighter and shorter (I wouldn't
say just "smaller") 500/2.8 might be in the same size range as the
400/2.8 except with larger front lenses, thus reasonably usable
though.
>As for DO, I think the 400/f4 is very much a launch project for the new

I think so, too. Canon want to milk all money they can from a new
*technology* product and since there is no competition they are not
forced to lower the prices unless they want to sell more of those.
Somehow I feel that producing the DO-elements is not so easy and
they have small yield (thus they get also lots of bad units from
production) so they are not in a hurry to sell large quantites.
One thing I currently don't like is that Canon seems to
concentrate much on the highest end products (1V, superteles,
70-200/2.8 IS, 400 DO, 16-35/2.8, 1D) leaving me and other
(only) reasonably funded "advanced amateurs" just onlookers.
Although they have made D30 (cheap only in it's own league)
there would be lot to do in the "1000- Euros" price class:
primes with USM, f4 L zooms, new battery pack for EOS-3,
digital back for EOS-3...
But maybe we are so few that Canon prefer to make money with
overpriced digital P&Ss for masses.
