Given Canon's enthusiasm in making new DO lenses one could be led to
believe that their first DO lens was a success! Optically it seems it
didn't meet expectations. The price is much higher than expected and
contradicts Canon's first press releases where they claimed that DO was
a less expensive technology. The commercial success of the 400mm DO is
still to be seen. My question is: why are they in such a hurry to build
other DO lenses? Have they improved the technology and these new lenses
are better optically than the 400mm? Do they believe that compactness
and weight are strong enough arguments to sell them? If the 500mm 2.8
will have no competition (first 500/2.8 ever made?), the 200-400 is
aiming , more or less, at the same market as the 100-400. It will be
faster, more compact and lightweight, but if optical quality is not as
good as the current 100-400, will it stand the comparison?
I'd like to hear other opinions on this.

Regards

Hugo
