Interesting, I have had all of the above with my EOS-3 and the EF100-400 about a dozen times over the last 2 years, I guess I notice the problems more with this combination as 80% of my images are taken with the EF100-400. I also have the EF28-135 lens for the past 4 years now, I did notice recently that the camera/lens failed to autofocus at one point when I half press the shutter release, I tried it 2 or 3 times without success and had to dismount and remount the lens before the problem went away, the lens/camera behaved normally for the next 36-frame roll I shot without any problem. I have tried the contact cleaning trick and now have to wait until next year's airshow/racing season before finding out if the problem is still there.
