Some time ago I used to own EOS50E (same as Elan IIE) + 28-135 USM IS combo, I had exactly same behavior about once or twice per roll. Took it to the canon service, they replaced some electronic parts inside the camera under warranty, after that all worked just fine. They also said that this is somewhat common to certain Elan/EOS50 batches.
