I think it depends on enlargement. I have only gone up to 8x10 with either lens, and it this size it's very hard to tell the difference. The 28-135 is much sharper than it "should be" as a zoom! And yes, I have shots taken at dawn with the lens wide open and you can see the hide pattern on the cows on a distant hillside. By the way, I've had mine for about a year now, with no kid glove treatment, and no problems. The zoom does creep out a bit when hung around your neck and walking vigorously, but I now have a reflex motion to reel it back in.
