I have a Wein shoe mount slave, and I found that neither the 540 nor the 550 can be mounted onto it. And I found the same for a Hama shoe mount to PC cord adapter.
Me thinks that Canon might have deviated from the shoe mount specification (size, dimensions, etc), in order to "protect" us Canonites from "nasty" third party equipment. As to whether metal could damage the flash by shorting certain contacts - sounds plausible, but just a bit improbable to me. If it was so, just touching the contacts, or mounting/unmounting while powered up would damage the flash. That would be an accident waiting to happen. Of course, that way Canon could sell more flashes ...
