No way!  I've paid for the 550EXs out of my own money, and it's not worth the
risk.  Canon have every right to assume that you'll plug the 550EX etc. into a
hot shoe meeting their specification.  I thought of insulating my plain metal
shoe with sellotape but in the end I didn't risk it, as the terminals looked as
though they would easily cut through the sellotape.  Without a circuit diagram
(plus other info as well) it's just not possible to be certain that the inputs
and outputs are short circuit proof.
