I've used the Canon off-camera shoe and it works fine (without any cables) with my 550EXs on Photax metal shoes mounted on metal stands. The Canon off-camera shoe has a plastic base (providing insulation), and there is also a tripod screw socket. (I had the off-camera shoes already so it was a "zero" cost solution for me <g>. Actually found a use for them!) Being able to turn the 550Ex's heads round by 180deg so as to point into the brollies is great as this points the sensors at the subject illuminated by my ST-E2.
