I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned the work around for this DOF issue.

A number of EOS bodies offer the facility but some bodies work differently
from others. I think the way it works on the 30/Elan 7 is far better (more
control) than the lower end bodies but I am somewhat surprised to learn it
is no better on the 1v.

I think its a valuable tool in certain situations but the fact that Canon
choose a .2mm CoC is a bit limiting I think. These are pro and semi-pro
bodies and yet the .2mm CoC is supposed to be useful for prints only up to
7x5 I understand. How many pros use 7x5 or smaller. Not many methinks.

Anyway, the work around on an 30/Elan 7, or the 50E (and probably the 3 &
1v) is to choose your near and far points as usual, but then without
changing focus point, switch the lens to MF so that you effectively "lock
in" the focus point. Then switch the camera to Av mode and select a smaller
aperture (than the one that DEP mode gave) to gain as much extra DoF (or
smaller CoC) as you like. I find just an extra stop or 2 is normally fine
depending on EV level and resultant shutter speed.

Alternatively, simply choose near and far focus points "beyond" those that
you actually want. I use both methods for slides projected up to 5ft x 3ft
with complete success.

Cheers
Norman
