Why jump through all those hoops? While the range of apparent focus changes with
aperture, the ratio of DOF is relatively constant: one third in front of the
plane of focus, and two-thirds behind. I don't bother with DEP--I simply focus
on an object about 1/3 into the scene (or that portion of the scene for which I
want apparent sharpness), compose, and shoot. (This is one reason I don't let
the camera select a focusing sensor.) I mostly shoot in Av mode so I've already
chosen the aperture that gives me the DOF I want. Quick and easy.
