This thread has gone in such confusing circles it's difficult to remember what
the original question was. However--

The DOF button/feature has *nothing* to do with DEP mode. The DOF button is for
previewing DOF, plain and simple. If you change the aperture setting while
depressing the DOF button, you should see the apparent DOF change through the
viewfinder (and the image lighten or darken).

DEP mode is a somewhat useful method of placing the range of apparent focus
within an image, in the absence of DOF markings on many EOS lenses. As described
in another post, you choose an object at the neaar edge of the area you want in
focus and press the shutter button--DEP 1 appears in the viewfinder; then an
object at the far edge of that area and press the shuter button again--DEP 2
appears--and finally focus halfway into the area you want in focus and take the
photo. The camera selects an aperture/shutter-speed combination that will give
you the necessary depth of field. In the old days you would choose the furthest
and nearest objects and then adjust the focus by lining up the appropriate
distance markings on the lens barrel with the f/stop-value marks so that the
range of distance you wanted fell between the marks for the aperture you'd
chosen. With DEP, you won't see the effect of the camera's choices in the way
you see the effect of different apertures when using the DOF button.

I seem to recall that the original question was whether programmed exposure
shift was available in DEP mode. Exposure shift is simply a function in Program
mode whereby the speed/aperture values chosen by the camera can be shifted
without changing the exposure, by turning the main dial. There is no mention in
the Elan 7/EOS 30 manual about program shift being available in DEP mode (which
is in the "creative zone.")

For specifics about how DEP and program shift work on your particular body, READ
THE MANUAL.
