That's the nature of ground glass screens. Actually, I find the laser etched screens for the F-1 (old and N) and EOS 1 series to be the best for manual focusing. There's a good balance between image brightness and overall contrast that's easier on the eye when attempting manual focus. You will see some "graininess", (laser pattern) esp. when stopping down. But I've never encountered any sort of bluriness. Was the matte surface cleaned? (harshly?)
