I don't think this is true - The 1s are darker because their default
screens are etched fairly coarsely, probably because Canon assumes that
1-series customers are more likely to focus manually. Both the 1n and
1v can accept "bright" screens of the sort found on consumer Canon
bodies without any loss of AF performance, and with those screens
their viewfinders are as bright as any other EOS - The only gotcha
is that you just need to make sure that the setting of CF0 matches the
screen in use.

The only EOSes I can think of that actually have inherently dim
viewfiners as you suggest above are the RT and 1n-RS, which have
partially reflective fixed-pellicle mirrors.

I have both an EOS-3 and a 1v, and have two each of the Ec-CIII (the
laster-matte screen that ships with the 1v) and Ec-N (the new laser
matte screen that comes with the 3). I tend to use the Ec-CIII screens
in both bodies, because I find that this screen, though dimmer, snaps
more cleanly into focus for off-center subjects (the two types are
about equivalent in the center circle, though).

This is a classic tradeoff, by the way - More finely etched and brighter
screens always tend to be a bit less snappy to focus. I find the Beatties
to be absolutely horrible in that regard - The only time they really make
sense is in dim light, where the extra brightness makes the difference
between un-snappy focussing and no focussing at all.
