Howard - As a heavy user of the 28-135 IS in the year I've owned it, I
have had no dust problems so far. There is some creep, but it's only
been really noticeable when hiking over rough trerrain that results in
a lot of jogging. I've developed a reflex of just reaching down and
racking the lens back in. Second nature now. I hear you can put some
fine rubber bands on the inner barrel for some added friction. I
haven't found it necessary.

The lens is definetely bulkier, but I don't really find it a
consideration at all. That's a call you'll have to make, and I've
never owned a 28-105. . I don't use IS all *that* often, but when I
do - like concert photography or low light landscapes - - I'm sure
glad I have it! Subject movement is more of a problem than anything
else then.

I'm a big fan of the lens, it's not perfect but it's one of the best
zoom lenses I own. Has a different look than say the old FD
35-105/3.5 which is a benchmark zoom IMO. Maybe even a little
sharper, and renders things a little more "3-D-ish."
