> Why do you all prefer Canon ? :-)

Consider VERY carefully your present needs and interests and, to the extent possible,
how these are likely to change.

If you are interested in, or expect to become interested in using long lenses, it is
my very considered opinion that Canon's
IS system makes them the only reasonable choice.

After 30 years with Nikon, I switched when it came time to buy a 300mm f2.8 lens. I
could not see paying essentially the same
money for Nikon's when Canon's included this very useful feature. Nikon remains light
years behind Canon in this particular
respect and shows no signs of closing the gap. I would the feel the same way about a
600mm f4 and have since bought the
EF600/4 L IS. Why, oh why would I pay such a price for lenses such as these and NOT
get image stabilization when it is
available? !

Otherwise, I see little difference in the two. Nikon has finally issued a 300mm AFS
lens that retains AF capability with
their TCs. This was another big point for me personally. They still do not have a
400mm f5.6 prime though. Does that matter
to you? It was very important to me at one point and Nikon had only a old design
manual focusing model in their line up at
that time(and the price was ludicrous!) . . . now they have none.

(If Canon's 400/5.6 had IS, I might buy one even now but the acquisition of the
EF300/2.8L IS has cooled my ardor for a
400/5.6 somewhat.)

These were the factors that brought me to Canon. They may well be quite irrelevant to
you.
