As for ballheads, I use the Graf Studioball - as the name implies, this head is/was designed for studio use - I must be using this head out of spec, as I have no hesitation using it in the field. A fellow photographer and pro nature photographer uses the Graf Studioball with his 1v and the 400/2.8 (for bird photography and such), which is more weight (+/- 15 pounds) than I ever had on my Studioball.
The Graf Studioball QR plates have a great feature - a notch for securing the camera gear before tightening the QR mount on the head. Only drawback I can see it it's weight.
