Jerry, I totally agree with you on your RRS attitude comments. They are worse on the phone than in the catalog. The Kirk guys are very helpful and the service is excellent.
For a ball head, I went with the Gitzo 1377M Center Ball head. Quite light compared to these others that were mentioned, and it works relatively smoothly with my 300/2.8+2x+D60. It comes in at under 2 bills, but you have to add the Arca style QR adapter. However, it is not "aspherical" like the Arca, so the resistance doesn't get progressively stronger as the ball leans over. That is a nice feature. Do the Kirk heads have this or only the Arca stuff?
