Hi Ken,

My worst pictures ever taken were with a Cullman ballhead that had a thin
wire post. It was light, but it acted like a pendulum, so undoing any
stability afforded by a good legset.

For long glass like an EF 100-400 IS USM, I now prefer use a ballhead
without a post (e.g. Manfrotto 438=Bogen 3502, load capacity 15kg = 33lb)
together with adapters for a QR (Manfrotto 120 = Bogen 3054 + It looks
ugly, and it is relatively heavy (0.7kg = 1.5lb), and will not allow
verticals (the tripod mount ring does that), but it is STABLE.

For panning, the links above suggest the Manfrotto 501 series, but I have
good results from the much lighter Manfrotto 200 = Bogen 3160 polycarbonate
video head. (0.65kg = 1.4lb).

Since I am on a weight reduction kick, I guess it is time to consider a
carbon fibre tripod. Unfortunately there is no ideal CF 3pod on the market.

Cheers
Julian Loke
