  I'm afraid I have to agree with you. I did a fair bit of research 
for my EOS flash photography article, and there isn't much hard data 
out there. There's a modest amount of stuff on TTL and A-TTL, but 
very little indeed covering E-TTL.

  As you point out, E-TTL metering patterns aren't really explained. 
Neither is the fill flash reduction algorithm. There are other big 
holes, but those are two fairly important ones that make a real 
difference to how photographers use their cameras. Here's hoping 
Canon release some more data in the future.
