I am going to Italy soon with my wife, 9 year old daughter and 10 year old
son. We will be going to Rome, Venice, and Tuscany.

Which set-up would you take? Why?

Elan 7, 20-40 zoom, 70-200/4, 50 1.8, flash (bulkiest, widest coverage)

Elan 7, 20-40 zoom, 28-135IS, 50 1.8, flash (middle of the road)

Elan 7, 20-40, 100 2.8 macro, 50 1.8, flash (most compact)

Using 100 and 400 speed print film mostly, 100 speed slide film sometimes

I would take the middle of the road but honestly think you can leave the
50mm at home. You will have all covered from 20 to 135mm with the 2 lenses.
If you really want to feel complete, pick up a Tamron 1.4x which will work
with your 28-135mm and provide you with a 190mm at the long end. This way
just in case you need the reach its there.
